Notes from an Opoto in Kambia

Language

We didn’t really have any problems making ourselves understood, so this list is a little feeble. Many people in Kambia speak English or you can get by as Krio is somewhat similar (try adding an o on the end or reducing your sentence to one word!)

In case you haven’t already clicked, Opoto is white skin (originally the word for a Portuguese person). This isn’t an insult but a statement of fact and you will hear it everywhere. It is perfectly acceptable to retort with Winibie (pronounced win-ee-bee) which means black skin in Timne. Despite many reassurances from local people, I am still not sure I would feel comfortable shouting this though.

Also in Timne -
